Yuptown – typeface and specimen

Typography

Yuptown is a condensed typeface inspired by 80’s yuppie culture.

Yuppies, Young Urban Professionals were fashionable middle-class workers with a well-paid job. I heard this expression on a  course about contemporary consumer culture, which inspired me to create a yuppie-like, classical elegant typeface with tiny serifs. For the first sight it’s a serious, transitional serif font, but the evil lies in the details: the playful angles give fresh vibes for the typeface. It designed to be easy to read and usable for narrow columns.

The type specimen is my most personal design in the past years, as it sums up my research on yuppies, and yuppies in the pop culture, for example in American Psycho. It’s an experimental ’collage’ newspaper, printed in broadsheet size.
